Day 11

1 Corinthians 8: 7

“Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.

Idols. Something we all have or have had at some point in our life whether we care to admit it or not. It is written in 1 Corinthians 8, verse 7, “Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.” This verse highlights on exactly what we tend to turn a blind eye to, our conscience begins to be filled with the messages and ideals in which our idols hold, but in the end, this will not provide any real benefit for us.

Especially in our society today, social media has structured us to strive to be like the people that show up on our feed. Celebrities, athletes, influencers, all these people while they can be someone we look up to you, or knowledge us on things that we may not know much about, when does it get too far? We suddenly see ourselves praising these people, people who if you think about it, aren’t really the ones making impact in our lives, it is only God who can make an impact that will have a lasting effect. All the messages and information these people provide to us is only temporary, idols are temporary, but God and his love and grace and guidance is infinite. Seems pretty cliché, I know, but it’s true. In Psalm 115, verse 8, it says, “Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.” It is always easier to place our trust in these people because we think since we can see them physically, it brings a sort of comfort, but in reality, the most comfort we will ever receive is from the one who though we cannot see with our naked eye, provides a sense of comfort and security no celebrity or artist or athlete could ever.

Think about it, at one of our idols concert, it is so easy to lift our hands up and somewhat “praise” these people, but it is too “scary” to lift our hands in church during worship and praise the one God that has been with us since the beginning, who has cared for each and everyone one of us individually. That’s the difference between loving other gods and our God, is that to idols, you are seen as just a fan, but to our God, we are seen as his children, our burdens are his burdens, and His love for us will never be temporary.
