Day 41

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. Matthew 4:10-11

In today’s Lenten Devotion we are focusing on overcoming temptation based on the bible portion Matthew 4:1-11. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

In this portion, you can see three times how the devil was tempting Jesus. In verse two and three states, “After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” The devil was trying to take advantage of Jesus by mentioning bread. The devil knew Jesus was hungry. Jesus responded by saying man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”   In verse six and seven the devil took him to the highest point and said throw yourself down. Again, Jesus responded saying do not put the Lord your God in a test. The devil was testing Jesus to see if he would throw himself. Even if throw himself, the Lord almighty would be catching him. In verse eight and nine the devil took him to the highest mountain and said this could be yours if you bow down and worship me. Jesus responded away from me, Satan! For it is written worship the Lord your God and serve him only. Sometimes as humans the devil can bring the same kind temptation to us.

As human beings sometimes we get the same temptation. We go behind the worldly pleasures that is tempting and the devil forces us go to that happiness, but the real happiness comes Jesus Christ as you know him as your personal savior. This devotion shows us in order live in this world we have to overcoming the daily temptation from the devil. As Christian, we should have strong faith and believe in Jesus Christian.

In conclusion, as youth we all should have a personal relationship with God. This will empower us to overcome the devil’s temptation.
